Typical cuisines of Minangkabau are available across the archipelago. Thus we can say that everybody must have already tasted it. Main ingredients of West Sumatera Barat are highly varied. Typical taste of Minang cuisines is hot and spicy. Such taste is derived from coconut milk and red chilies consumed mainly by Minang people. The main ingredients are beef, bowels, brains, chicken, duck, fishes, and eggs. The veggies commonly consumed are long green beans, cassava leaves, fruits, jackfruits, string beans as well as petai (beans with pungent odor, widely eaten raw and cooked) and jengkol (the beans eaten raw, the Phithecolobium). Ingredients play a significant role in Minang cuisines. Minang people are extravagant with ingredients. The seasonings are thick and strong. The main seasonings are red chilies, garlic, ginger, galingale, turmeric and turmeric leaves, basil leaves etc.
